Recently declared revenue villages, this area is in discussion due to its historical heritage between dense forests and natural beauty. Wonderful carvings appear on some stones scattered in the middle of the village. Villagers believe that these rocks were found by their ancestors in excavation. The shapes made on them appear to be like God. These sculptures kept in the open for years are now getting damaged over time. The villagers say that whenever someone tried to remove these stones, he had to face any untoward, so that no one dare to touch them anymore.
Connection to Katyuri dynasty
A team of archeology department visited the village in the year 2021, but so far no concrete report has been revealed. There is resentment among the villagers. He says that if scientific studies and protection of these rocks are done, then this place can become a big center of religious and historical tourism. According to local historian Ganesh Rawat, these rocks are called Virkhamb. They are related to the Katyuri reign of 10th to 12th century. These symbolic columns were made to assert rights over boundaries or land. He has demanded their intensive archaeological investigation and protection.
People have kept staring
The forest department is also planning to preserve this area. DFO Digant Nayak of Ramnagar Forest Division said that the region is historically important and can be developed as a tourism circuit in the future. Chopra village may be anonymous today, but history hidden in its womb, if proper protection is found, then it can emerge as a new historical site on the tourism map of Uttarakhand. The villagers hope that the government and the archeology department will take steps towards preserving this heritage.
