It is not just a tree but a living natural wonder, whose huge branches and spreading shade are famous all over the world. Due to its age, vastness and cultural importance, this banyan tree has become a center of attraction for tourists and local people. The branches of this banyan tree are so spread that its shadow spreads over about 19,000 square yards i.e. about 1.6 hectares. According to estimates, more than 1000 people can sit comfortably in its shade.
History and mystery of the name
Its age is estimated to be around 800 years, which means that this tree exists even before the time of Kakatiya dynasty and Bahmani Sultanate. According to folklore, the Nizam rulers of Hyderabad used to come here for picnics in summers to enjoy the cool and dense shade of this tree.
The name of this tree, Pillalamari, is derived from the local language, where “Pilla” means child and “Marri” means couple. According to local folklore, childless couples who prayed under this tree were blessed with children, which further increased its religious and cultural importance.

Today this place has become an ideal weekend getaway for people in and around Hyderabad. It is maintained by the Telangana Tourism Department and arrangements have been made here for the convenience of tourists. It is located about 100 kilometers away from Hyderabad and just 5 kilometers from Mahabubnagar Bus Station. This place can be easily reached by car or bus.
