Nalanda University of ancient India is considered to be the first residential university in the world, which was founded in the 5th century by Kumaragupta I, the ruler of the Gupta dynasty. Thousands of students from Tibet, China, Korea, Japan and Sri Lanka used to come here to study here. Its vast library ‘Dharmaganj’ was famous for Buddhist texts and store of knowledge. This university was destroyed three times, it was rebuilt twice, but the last time Turk invading Bakhtiyar Khilji destroyed it completely in the 12th century but its remains still testify to Vidya-Gaurav of Bihar.

China’s great passenger and scholar Hiuen Tsang studied and teaching for years at Nalanda University in the 7th century. In his memory, a grand monument, Hiuen Tsang Memorial Hall has been built in Nalanda. It is a symbol of India-China cultural relations and presents a lively picture of Nalanda and the civilization of that era through traveling by Hiuen Tsang.

Pavapuri is the sacred land where Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism, gave his final teachings and found Nirvana. This place today is a pilgrimage for Jain devotees, where Jalamandir is a wonderful architecture of marble among a beautiful lake. Pavapuri is not only the center of religious faith but also a symbol of the values of non -violence and renunciation.

It is told about this gold reserves that the wife of Bimbisar, the founder of the Haryak dynasty, hid her gold in this store, which no one has been able to know till date. It is said that Bimbisar, the founder of Haryak dynasty, was very fond of gold and silver. In this cave, the treasure of Haryanka dynasty is kept hidden. The British had also tried to enter it once, but they could not succeed in it.

Pandu Pokhar located in Nalanda district is known for its beauty. The relationship of this place is seen by linking it to the Mahabharata period. It is said that Maharaja Pandu used to do this place as Maharaja Pandu stables. Due to which a pit became at this place and later rain water started accumulating here and he took the form of a pond. It is also told in some stories that Maharaj Pandu used to come here to bathe, due to which the name of this place has become Pandu Pokhar.
