Dharohar: Domkonda Fort, also known as Gadi Domkonda, is an ancient historical fort located in Nalgonda district of Telangana. Its original name was ‘Dwarkapuri’, which changed with time to ‘Domkonda’. This fort is situated on a high granite hill, which provides natural protection to it. The Kakatiya dynasty ruled here from the 12th to the 14th century, but the present fort was built by the Reddy rulers of Domakonda in the 18th century.
Hyderabad. A historical Domkonda Fort also known as Gadi Domkonda is a grand historical heritage site located in Nalgonda district of Telangana state. It is not just a fort but is a silent witness to many chapters of the history of Telangana. According to historian Dr. Zia, the original name of Domkonda is considered to be Dwarkapuri which changed to Domkonda with time. This fort is built on a huge granite rocky hill, which has naturally strengthened its security. This region was ruled by the Kakatiya dynasty (12th-14th century).
Role in Qutub Shahi and Asaf Jahi regime
When the Qutb Shahi Sultans of Golconda extended their influence over the region, the Reddy rulers of Domakonda accepted their subjugation. During this period the fort remained an important jagir and its rulers also held high posts in the Qutb Shahi army. The princely state of Domkonda maintained its importance even during the rule of the Nizams over Hyderabad, this fort was an important military base and administrative center for the army of the Nizam of Hyderabad.
Hindu Muslim style architecture
The most special thing about Domkonda Fort is its architecture where a beautiful coordination of Hindu and Muslim styles can be seen. This coordination reflects its history. Inside the fort complex are the Ramalingeswara Swamy Temple and the Venkateswara Swamy Temple, which are excellent examples of Hindu sculpture. The main palace and gateways of the fort have arches, domes and minarets, which are hallmarks of Islamic architecture. This beautiful two-storey structure located in the center of the fort used to be the residence of the royal family. Its balconies, windows and huge halls give a feeling of royal grandeur, the mixture of both the styles is clearly visible in this building. Today Domkonda Fort is a protected monument under the Government of Telangana and is developing as a popular tourist destination. Tourists come here to see the grand architecture, historical importance and picturesque views of the surrounding areas, the illumination of the fort at night makes it even more beautiful.
