Dr. Mukesh Angle, an environment and history expert in Rewa, says that the Deur Kothar hill, located about one and a half hours from Prayagraj and 70 km from Rewa, contains 5000 years old historical heritage. This place is famous for its ancient Buddhist stupas throughout India. The reflection of voice here gives people a magical feeling.
Ancient caves and rock paintings are present in Deur Kothar in Rewa district. It is said that these mural paintings were engraved by human beings. This place is located at a distance of 3.5 km from Katra on the Rewa-Prayagraj National Highway. During 1999-2000, excavation work was done by the Madhya Pradesh Archaeological Department, in which important antiquities of Buddhist architecture were found. In these, clear remains of Stupa and Vihar were found. The credit for this historical discovery goes to Dr. Fanikant Mishra and local researcher Ajit Singh.
Maurya carpet rock painting and stupa
Located about 70-72 km from both Prayagraj and Rewa, this site is historically very important. The age of the murals and rock paintings here is estimated to be around 5000 years, which are considered to be of Maurya period. At the same time, the Buddhist stupas found here are about 2000 years old. The first glimpse of this place was found in 1982, after which its discovery started. After 1999, this historical site has been recognized worldwide.
The most unique feature of Deur Kothar is the echoes here. If someone stands at the end of the caves and speaks loudly towards the litigants, then his voice is heard back at least 8 miles away. This is called ‘Eco Effect’. Due to this special design of nature, tourists coming here are mesmerized by this experience.
These remains of Maurya and Sunga period are considered to be the second and third centuries BC. Research has shown that this site must have been a large Buddhist monument, where Buddhist monks used to take initiation. It must have been a commercial route in ancient times. This site has also been related to Bharhut and Kaushambi.
Apart from the murals made by Adimanav, the remains of a huge Mauryan stupa of the third century have also been found. There are a total remains of a total of 40 stupas. Of these, stupa number-1 made of bricks is very important. This stupa is built on the square platform, around which the pradakshina path can be clearly seen. The names of donors are also inscribed in the Brahmi script on the stupa.
Some pieces of pillar made of red sandstone have been found in the western region of the stupa. One of these has found an article of six rows in the Brahmi script, which is dedicated to Lord Buddha. It is believed that this must have been the entrance to the western region of the stupa.
The names of donors inscribed in the Buddhist stupa, Shailashray and Brahmi script present here make this entire region historically even more attractive. Huge rocks, green forests and greenery spread far and wide enhance the beauty of this place. This place is no less than a paradise for history lovers and tourists.
During the rainy season, the beauty of Deur Kothar takes four moons. This is the reason that tourists reach more during the rainy season. It can be easily accessible here by road. This Buddhist stupa is located between two states, so it reaches Shailani from both Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
