Hyderabad: Rachakonda Fort is a fortified fort located in Nalgonda district of Telangana, about 60 km from Hyderabad. This fort dates back to the 14th century and was built by the rulers of the Kakatiya dynasty. Later it became an important fort of the Vijayanagara Empire. Its name Rachakonda is derived from the Telugu word Raichukonda which means king’s mountain. Many kings have ruled here.

The history of Rachakonda Fort testifies to the changing times and conflicts of rulers. The Kakatiya rulers are believed to have established it as a strategic post to protect the south-western border of their empire. In the fifteenth century, the Vijayanagara Empire captured it and strengthened it further, building temples, palaces and strong walls here. Over time, this fort also came under the rule of the Musunuri Nayaks and the Bahmani Sultanate.

The fort was conquered by Sultan Quli Qutb Shah, the founder of Hyderabad in the sixteenth century. He was so impressed by its strength and strategic location that he decided to make the nearby Golconda Fort his new capital, with Rachakonda playing an important role as a security post. Ultimately, it was captured by the forces of the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb in the seventeenth century, and in the following years it remained under the Nizams of Hyderabad, although by then its strategic importance had declined significantly.

Architecture hidden in ruins
Although today this fort stands as a ruin, but its structures tell the story of its old grandeur. The most special feature of the fort is its double wall system, which made it extremely difficult for attackers to reach the fort. A small Hanuman temple situated at the peak of the fort provides a serene and spiritual retreat for the visitors. Apart from this, the remains of a large pond, the foundations of the palace and the ruins of other buildings can be seen here, which are evidence that a prosperous city once existed here.

An ideal destination for tourists
Rachakonda Fort is an ideal place not only for history lovers but also for nature and adventure activities lovers. To reach the fort one has to undertake a moderate trek of about 30-45 minutes. The reward for this trek is the amazing view from the top of the fort. From here, a picturesque view of the surrounding hills, villages and green fields spread far and wide is visible, on which the redness of sunrise and sunset adds special charm.
